Founded in 1866 and names for Vincount Cardwell, a British colonial secretary, Cardwell Township was home to the first Icelandic settlement in Canada. Hekkla, a small hamlet that still exists today, was named for a volcanic mountain back in Iceland. Still very sparsely populated, this region is still nearly as rustic and remote as when the Icelanders first called it home.
