Today, Nobel is a community of houses just outside Parry Sound, a century ago it was a bustling home to two explosives and munitions factories and in the 1950s, the testing grounds of engine of the ill-fated Avro Arrow. The town was named for Alfred Nobel, the inventor of explosives because during the First World War, two companies set up shop, and during the war, produced a total of 21 million pounds of Cordite. Production resumed in 1939 for WWII.  Today, these factories sit empty rusted and reclaimed by nature, and are most popular with hikers and photographers.
